Venus moves through the night sky like a relative with her own historical itinerary. For Ojibwe and Dakota/Lakota/Nakota communities, her presence is part of a larger cosmological configuration. Though she is a planet in scientific terms, she appears with the brilliance and patterned reliability of a star, which is why she’s known as the Women’s Star or the Red Day Star. She is a celestial being whose cycle mirrors the body: nine months rising in the east, a brief disappearance, nine months setting in the west, which aligns with human gestation. Because of this correspondence, she’s tied to fertility, feminine force, and the continuity of life. Her celestial phases shape stories, ceremonies, agricultural timing, and moral instruction.
