Romance of the Rose (Le Roman de la Rose) is a medieval French allegorical poem, written in two parts by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. It tells the story of a young lover's quest to win the heart of a woman symbolized by a rose. The first part, written by de Lorris, is a courtly love allegory, reflecting the chivalric ideals of noble devotion and unattainable love that were prominent in medieval European literature. Though distinctly European, these themes of courtly love were likely influenced by earlier Arabic poetic traditions, particularly the concept of ʿishq—passionate, unrequited love—brought to Europe during the Arab conquests.
In courtly traditions, the rose symbolized unattainable, idealized love, beauty, and virtue, often embodied by a noble lady. This is captured in the design of the earrings, with the heart at the center as an emblem of the lady. The thorns represent the knight's trials in pursuing this love, highlighting perseverance, honor, and devotion. Rather than signifying suffering, the thorns symbolize strength and resilience, reflecting the knight’s dedication to virtuous ideals and the personal growth gained from overcoming challenges in the pursuit of elevated, spiritual love.
